When walking into this shopping center in Osaka, Japan, you might find yourself startled by the sudden appearance of a swimming pool that drops away precipitously into the heart of the building! What a great optical illusion. Looks like a 20-foot drop. Somebody should put up a sign. The pool is wide, deep and yet barely filled, creating a cavernous appearance. The walls are caked in grime, with missing tiles and exposed plaster.
Move closer and you’ll see it’s not a pool at all — just an elaborate illusion created by Amsterdam-based artist Jeroen Bisscheroux. The “pool” is actually a carpet, allowing visitors to walk across — seemingly on air.
